A massive internal upgrade that brings the best of Apple’s audio tech to a more comfortable, tip-free design.

For years, the standard AirPods lineup sat in a bit of an awkward spot—sandwiched between the budget-friendly AirPods 2 and the feature-rich AirPods Pro. With the release of the AirPods 4, Apple has finally unified its audio philosophy. This standard version (non-ANC) aims to provide the premium H2 chip experience to those who prefer an 'open-ear' design. After spending a week with these as my primary daily drivers, it's clear that Apple didn't just iterate; they re-engineered the experience from the ground up.
The most immediate change is the shape. Apple claims to have analyzed thousands of ear shapes to create a design that fits more securely without needing silicone tips. In practice, the AirPods 4 feel slightly more 'bulbous' in the right places compared to the AirPods 3, which helps them sit more securely during movement. They are exceptionally light at 4.3 grams per bud, making them easy to wear for four-hour stretches without the 'ear fatigue' common with in-ear models.
The charging case has also received a facelift—or rather, a shrink. It is now significantly smaller, making it one of the most pocketable earbud cases on the market. Apple has transitioned fully to USB-C here, which is a welcome change for cable consolidation. One subtle but controversial change: the physical pairing button on the back is gone. It has been replaced by a capacitive touch area on the front of the case. While it looks cleaner, it takes a moment to get used to the double-tap gesture required for pairing.
At $129, the AirPods 4 (Standard) are positioned as the entry-level premium option. If you don't need Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or wireless charging, these provide 90% of the AirPods Pro experience for a significantly lower price. However, it is important to note that for just $50 more, Apple offers a version of the AirPods 4 with ANC and a speaker-equipped case for Find My. If you frequently travel or work in loud offices, that $50 jump is likely worth it. But for the home office user or the casual listener, the standard AirPods 4 are a solid value.
These are designed specifically for the 'anti-tip' crowd. If silicone ear tips make your ears itch or feel pressured, these are the best-sounding open earbuds you can buy. They are also an essential upgrade for anyone still using the long-stemmed AirPods 2, as the jump in audio quality and features like 'Hey Siri' responsiveness is night and day. Android users, however, should look elsewhere, as you lose almost all the 'magic' features (Spatial Audio, instant pairing, automatic switching) that justify the price tag.
The Apple AirPods 4 (Standard) are the best open-earbuds Apple has ever made, offering a massive audio and microphone upgrade over previous generations. If you prioritize comfort and ecosystem features over silence and noise blocking, these are an easy recommendation. They are the gold standard for casual daily use within the Apple ecosystem.
